Research and Documentation

This page chronicles all of my formally documented arts and sciences projects. It is in reverse chronological order, with the most recent work at the top. Each project may have multiple links, but if there is anything I can answer questions on, please feel free to reach out. I also have a document standardizing the terms I use for various pieces of garb that can be found here.

Persona Pentathlon

I entered and won Persona Pentathlon at Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival in March 2024. My chosen persona was 16th Century Castilian. The full accounting of my entry can be found on the Persona Pentathlon page linked below.

Trade Route to Table: The Origins of Cooking Spices

For the Coronation of Afshin and Yasmin, I participated in Cultura Atlantia, whose theme was “trade routes.” The theme inspired me to study how Mariana would have acquired the spices used in her cooking and spice blends.

The Woman in the Yellow Saya

I was inspired by the woman in the lower right corner of the painting to the left. The project was finally formally documented in entirety for Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival (KASF) 2023. This includes all the trials, growth, and joys of this outfit and a brief summary of how I plan to give it another go in the future having learned a lot from the tester.

Three Spices from Nola

For Ponte Alto’s Savory Foods A&S block, I knew I wanted to revisit Nola to try to more deeply understand his flavor profiles and choices. I chose to make three spice blends from the Libro de guisados, manjares, y potajes that could later be incorporated in other meals and dishes: Spices for Common Sauce, Spices for Peacock Sauce, and Duke’s Powder.

To make a Custard

For the first meeting of the newly rechartered Saint Anne’s Guild of Clothiers at Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival 2022, I wanted to bring a fun snack for everyone. I made a saffron and spice custard topped with dried currants. This recipe comes from The Goodhuswifes Jewell.

Tempore Atlantia 2021

A special, online edition of Tempore Atlantia covered all 4 time frames. I submitted my first ever Spanish kit for 1350-1500. My entry included a camisa, calzas, saya, cofia y tranzado, sleeves, and an apron.

Royal Baker 2020

This competition included two different elements. First a pretzel of some kind, for which I made a caraway and orange blossom precedella. Second, a German dessert of some sort. For this I made a pear tart inspired by Sabina Welserin. The blog post on this can be found here.

12th Night 2020 Stollen

For this competition, I created a yeasted stollen recipe built around some of my favorite ingredients- etrog, sour cherries, ginger, and cardamom. The blog post on this process can be found here.

Storvik Novice 2019

For my first ever A&S competition, a “Novice Nine” largess competition selected by populace vote, I created nine blackworked pincushions inspired by English and Italian blackwork designs. You can find the blog post on it here.
